Nissan LEAF Q&A

HAVE YOU EVER COME CLOSE TO OR RUN OUT OF A CHARGE?

Top Top KEITH L, CA

NEVER RUN OUT.

Lowest was 8 miles range and one power bar.

Top Top SCOTT L, CA

NO, I'VE BEEN DOWN TO 3 MILES.

When I opted for the nearest charging station on the Nav, it gave me one 3 miles away. Up. Hill. On mountain roads. I made it.

ON A TEST CLOSE TO MY HOME I DROVE DOWN PAST THE "- - -" INDICATOR

and low-battery warning, to the very-low-battery warning and subsequent turtle mode. I wanted to see how the car's electronics limited it to try to give you the maximum range. I felt the speed limiter kick in and immediately headed for home a few hundred yards away. This was in cold weather, and I had the heat blasting away with all the lights on and everything else I could activate to more quickly deplete the power available. There is quite a residual distance after the initial warning, and I don't ever want to do this again.

Nissan Leaf Electric Dictionary Turtle Mode

When you’ve passed the point of very low battery, a small orange turtle appears in the center of your dash. Known as Turtle Mode, the icon lets you know that you have only a few miles of range left.

I DROVE TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN HERE

and brought it down to 0 bars and 1 mile remaining on the estimator. Coasting home, I earned 4 bars back and another 40 miles of driving.

Nissan Leaf Electric Dictionary Driving Range Meter

EV Term The Driving Range Meter lets you monitor your energy consumption. The number of bars shows you the amount of power spent on your drive, factors in your power regeneration, and lets you know how much charge you have left.

I'VE GOTTEN IT DOWN TO DASHES, BUT NEVER TURTLE MODE

or all the way out. I've tried a few times to drive my route extra aggressively, but I always seem to have enough range left over.

Top Top BIEKE P, TN

YES. WHEN I FIRST GOT THE LEAF AND I WAS JUST LEARNING HOW TO READ THE BARS.

I found a charging station near where I work and charged the car for about two hours, which allowed me to get home. It didn’t take long to figure out how my car works. I’m a master of momentum now. A trip that once took me 3 bars I can now do with 1 bar.

Top Top JARED S, FL

NO. I'VE GOTTEN TO 1 BAR BUT NEVER FURTHER.

I look at it like running out of gas: unless you're me in high school (completely broke), you don't run out of gas, do you?

HAVEN'T RUN OUT YET.

Been down to 0 bars left but never ran all the way out. I try to get the most that I can and luckily I haven't run of out battery power yet.

Top Top MICHELE W.L, TX

I HAVE GOTTEN IT DOWN TO ABOUT 5 MILES

but never turtle or run out.

Top Top ADAM P, CA

I'VE HAD THE TURTLE ONLY ONE TIME.

I was pushing it that day and had to get to work where I had an available wall outlet.

I RAN OUT OF CHARGE JUST ONCE DUE TO A LONG ROAD TRIP WITH A CHARGING POINT NOT BEING OPEN.

I drove 16 miles with 10 miles showing remaining, reaching turtle mode and then driving for about 1.5 miles before dying completely.
