The press and public alike were blown away, but they were also a bit skeptical. Would the final product deliver on the vision? Would we actually build this jetfighter-esque concept? Well, it’s official: we built it.

2017 Nissan Maxima Driving Down Street

Sport Mode

Shift Maxima’s Drive Mode Selector into Sport and it’s like kicking in the afterburners. Throttle response gets sharper, steering gets heavier, shifts get quicker, and the engine growl becomes a roar. Switch back to Normal Mode and supersonic gives way to super-smooth, super-refined, and surprisingly fuel-efficient.

300-HP 3.5-L V6 engine

Under the hood lies the beating heart: Nissan’s legendary VQ V6 engine. From sodium-filled exhaust valves and anodized pistons, to the high-flow tuned induction system, more than 60% of the engine’s components have been redesigned for the Maxima®. It even borrows some performance technology from the mighty GT-R®. This 300-hp powerhouse exhilarates from idle to redline.

Dynamic Handling

Maxima® is engineered to not only take corners, but to own them. The suspension is an independent subframe-mounted strut/coil spring design in front. In the rear is an independent multi-link double wishbone design with ZF Sachs dampers. The rear dampers features a monotube design, often found in performance applications, for enhanced performance and fade resistance. Large stabilizer bars are found front (24.2 mm) and rear (26.5 mm).

Xtronic CVT®

Forget everything you ever knew, and everything you ever heard, about Continuously Variable Transmissions. Engineered for both enthusiast and economist, Maxima’s CVT features dynamic step shifting, wider gear ratio coverage, and an adaptive shift controller. The result: more distinctive shift points, a more connected, spirited driving experience, and increased fuel economy.

2017 Nissan Maxima Driving Through Tunnel with Lights On

It challenges every conventional notion of what a 4-door sedan is. With 300 horsepower, a performance tuned suspension, a luxurious driver’s cockpit loaded with technology, striking aerodynamic styling, and a Sport Mode setting that’ll get your heart racing, it really isn’t just a sedan after all. It’s the 4-Door Sports Car®.

To design a sports-car built to fly, Nissan designers visited the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels® [*]. The cockpit design of their aircraft is echoed in the wraparound design of Maxima®.

Aggressive Lowered Stance

Externally, Maxima® is lowered, sculpted and streamlined.

Chrome-tipped Exhaust Finishers

Dual mufflers with rolled, chrome-tipped finishers.

Deeply sculpted character lines

A special metal-stamping technique was developed, adding the distinctive fighter-jet sweep to its body line and deeply scalloped doors.

"Floating" Roof

One look at Maxima’s "floating" roof appearance and the aeronautical influence is clear. The A, B, and C-pillars meld seamlessly into the glasswork, so the roof appears to hover over the cabin, just like the canopy of a fighter jet.

Signature Lighting

Up front, the boomerang-shaped headlights feature a captivating LED signature line that stays illuminated at all times. In back, LEDs also accent the wraparound taillights, and “4DSC” is embossed in the lamp housings, front and rear — a subtle reminder of what the Maxima® is all about.

Machine-finished Wheels and Custom Tires

18” Aluminum alloy wheels are aggressively styled, exclusively for Maxima®, while Maxima® SR raises the bar with 19” aluminum-alloy wheels and specially developed Goodyear® Eagle® F1 Asymmetric tires that help give you razor-sharp steering response and outstanding grip. [*]

Inspired by the layout of a modern fighter jet, Maxima® surrounds you in its luxurious, yet functional cockpit. A deeply bolstered sport seat helps keep you in place, the tall, angled center stack envelopes you and delivers all necessary information clearly and concisely, and every button, switch, and dial is exactly where you need it.

7° Center Console Tilt

Maxima® is a driver-focused car, so we rotated the center console 7° to focus on the driver. Inspired by the GT-R® cockpit, this subtle shift perfectly positions every button, knob, dial and display toward the driver for immediate, intuitive information and command.

Zero Gravity Front Seats

Maxima's sport-styled heated and cooled front seats are bolstered at just the right width and height to conform to your body and help keep you in place, even during high-G cornering.

Remote Engine Start System with Intelligent Climate Control

There are few things worse than getting into a cold car on a frigid winter morning, or into a sweltering car on a summer afternoon. With the Remote Engine Start System [*], you can use your compatible smartphone to heat up or cool down your Maxima® to the comfortable temperature it was when you left it. [*]

Ambient Lighting

Inspired by the glow of the gauges in an aircraft’s cockpit, ambient lighting casts a warm, understated glow across Maxima’s cabin. [*]

Nissan Advanced Drive-Assist® Display

Maxima’s cutting-edge technology connects you to your ride, and the road, like no other sports sedan. The standard 8” multi-touch control screen and the 7” Advanced Drive-Assist® Display keep key information as close as a glance. A standard navigation system guides you to where you want to go, and with navigation “Swipe to Meter”, you can even send map directions from one screen to the other with just a swipe. [*] Standard NissanConnectSM [*], standard Bluetooth® hands-free communications [*], an available Bose® Premium Audio system [*], turn-by-turn navigation—the list goes on. Nissan Maxima Safety Shield Predictive Forward Collision Warning

An Extra Set of Eyes

Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW)
Predictive Forward Collision Warning [*] can alert you to potential risks up ahead by monitoring the velocity and distance of the vehicle in front of the vehicle ahead of you. Although obscured from your forward field-of-view, sensors can detect if that vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly slows, giving you time to react to the situation. If the FEB system [*] detects that you need to slow down to avoid a frontal collision, FEB [*] will alert you with visual and audible cues and, if necessary, assist you by automatically applying pressure to the brakes to help avoid or mitigate a collision.

Forward Emergency Braking (FEB)
Using radar technology to help keep an eye on your speed and proximity to the vehicle ahead, FEB [*] gives you audio and visual display warnings to help you reduce your speed if necessary. If a collision is unavoidable, this feature will engage the brakes to help reduce both the speed of the impact and the severity of a collision.

When a collision is unavoidable, Nissan’s Zone Body construction helps absorb the impact while the advanced seat belt and air bag systems help protect passengers.

6 Standard Air Bags
The Nissan Advanced Air Bag System [*] has front air bags with seat belt and occupant-classification sensors. In addition, Maxima® features front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags with rollover sensors.

Nissan safety engineers have dedicated thousands of hours to evaluating hundreds of child restraints in Nissans. The result: an industry first, The Snug Kids® Child Safety Seat Fit Guide. This guide lists child seats that fit the rear seats of Nissan vehicles, as well as offers invaluable tips on correct installation. Look for the latest Fit Guide at NissanUSA.com/SnugKids.

LATCH System
(Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children)

Whether you need to hit the brakes hard or maneuver around an unexpected obstacle, these standard technologies help you respond to a potentially harmful situation.

Vehicle Dynamic Control [*]
helps you maintain your steered path.

Traction Control System
helps reduce wheelspin in low traction situations.

Anti-lock Braking System
helps you maintain steering control around obstacles while braking heavily.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution
sends extra force to the rear brakes when you have additional weight of passengers or cargo in the back.

Brake Assist [*]
helps apply maximum braking force if it detects hard braking and senses you are in an emergency situation.

Smart technologies are designed to help monitor conditions. Like a warning to let you know there is someone in the blind spot area, [*] or a system that helps ensure you’re traveling on properly inflated tires. [*]

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with Easy-Fill Tire Alert
TPMS [*] lets you know when a tire is low. And Easy-Fill Tire Alert [*] takes the guesswork out of filling your tires, with a beep of the horn when you’ve reached the correct pressure.
